July 10 - Flipside Memphis

Live From Memphis and the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau present the Flipside Memphis 2010 Premiere, a screening of short documentary films about the cool and unique elements of Memphis.

Here's a story in the Flyer about Flipside, its roots in Craig Brewer's "$5 Cover" and details on how it came about.

Topics are as diverse as Shelby Farms, Jerry Lawler, the Beale Street Flippers and Royal Studios. More info is at FlipsideMemphis.com.

The screening/party is this Saturday, July 10, at 1 p.m. at the Brooks Museum. And it's free.

It's a great way to support our town, the arts, and the arts in our town.

June 9 - Scripts from the Crypt

Scripts from the Crypt returns to St. Mary's Cathedral Wednesday, June 9, at 6:30 p.m.

The featured work is "Imagination," an original work by Levi Frazier, Jr., actor, director, writer, and college professor. "Imagination" is a cerebral twist on historical fact -- a Revolutionary War slave girl matches wits with Russia's most famous poet, Alexander Pushkin.

Scripts From The Crypt is a Mid-South script-reading group, created to provide a forum for writers to hear their work -- and the works of others -- read aloud. The free event is in the Crypt (basement) of St. Mary's Cathedral, 700 Poplar, and you are welcome to attend as a reader or as an audience member.

May 20 - Reel To Real with John Beifuss

On Thursday May 20 at 7 p.m., the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art's Reel to Real Series features John Beifuss, film reviewer and reporter at The Commercial Appeal.

He will talk about his theory that 1932 was the best year for horror movies, ever – as evidenced by this screening of the controversial pre-code classic Island of Lost Souls. Not available on DVD and banned in England until 1958, the film stars Charles Laughton as an obsessed scientist seeking to accelerate Darwinian evolution by transforming men into animals in his jungle “House of Pain.” Sex, religion, race – it’s all here! With Kathleen Burke as “Lota the Panther Woman” and a fur-faced Bela Lugosi, who asks the question that decades later would inspire Devo: “Are we not men?”  Based on a novel by H.G. Wells.

Tickets: $6 members, $8 non-members. Free with VIP Film Pass. For more information or to purchase tickets call 901.544.6208. Go here for more info.
