DeWaynda sizzles

Memphis actor Neal Figueroa, looking like "a cross between Pat Benatar and Dolph Lundgren," filmed a scene Monday morning on Beale Street where he played drag queen DeWaynda in "Losers Take All." Read John Beifuss' story in The Commercial Appeal here.

The comedy tells the story of a fictional, 1980s punk band in Memphis that struggles to make it and then struggles to run from its success.

The project, a client of the Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission, was in pre-production for several weeks before filming began on Aug. 16. It stars Allison Scagliotti ("Warehouse 13") and Kyle Gallner ("A Nightmare on Elm Street," "CSI: New York").

A substantial number of the cast and crew have been hired locally. Additionally, original songs for the film were produced by singer-songwriter Marshall Crenshaw and Memphian Scott Bomar and recorded with Memphis musicians at Bomar's Electraphonic Recording studio.

The film is budgeted at $1.5 million and is directed by Alex Steyermark of "Prey for Rock & Roll," and "One Last Thing."
