Commission-connected films at Indie Memphis

Several films that are clients of the Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission are being screened at the Indie Memphis Film Festival in November.

Two Showcase Screenings are among the projects.

"Undefeated" is a documentary centering on three underprivileged student-athletes from Memphis' Manassas High School and the inspiration they need to not only overcome their bleak surroundings, but also to win the first playoff game in the school’s 110-year history.

"Losers Take All," directed by Alex Steyermark, is an indie rock comedy set in Memphis, circa 1986. The film follows The Fingers, who are formed when two average punks recruit two reluctant metal heads into their band. The soundtrack was recorded in Memphis at Scott Bomar's Electraphonic Recording studio with Marshall Crenshaw.

Also screening at Indie Memphis is "Woman's Picture," an anthology film written and directed by Memphian Brian Pera and inspired by classic women's films of the 1930s, '40s and '50s. The three-part story stars Ann Magnuson, Memphian Amy Lavere and Calpernia Addams.

There are other Commission-assisted projects in the film festival as well - check out the Indie Memphis Website here for more info.

"Woman's Picture" will screen Saturday, Nov 5, at 1:15 pm. "Undefeated" shows at 6:30 pm on Thursday, Nov. 3. "Losers Take All" will be at 7 pm Saturday, Nov. 5.

"Losers Take All," in addition to being a client project of the Film Commission, is a participant in The Memphis & Shelby County Film Commission/MemphisED Production Training Program. The innovative program, created by Film Commissioner Linn Sitler, offers a refund of local wages to the production company in exchange for on-the-job training of local crew.

“This year’s Indie Memphis is truly a celebration of the work of the Film Commission with these outstanding client films premiering there," said Sitler. “We can’t wait to see all the filmmakers again and have them show Memphis their films.”

Advance tickets are available. Indie Memphis members may purchase their first ticket at a $3 discount. For complete details about festival tickets and passes, please visit www.indiememphis.com.
