'Romance of Loneliness' filming this summer

Principal photography begins in August on the local feature project "The Romance of Loneliness."

The film is co-directed by writer Sarah Ledbetter and Matteo Servente. The two collaborated on the short film "Dammi Il La," which screened at several festivals around the world.

"The Romance of Loneliness" stars Amy LaVere in her first starring role as Amanda, a woman from a traditional Southern family who has no idea what to make of her life and is determined to avoid finding out.

The film is being produced by Paper Moon Films' Ryan Watt and Nick Case. The partners teamed up in June of last year to help service the needs of local and southern filmmakers. Paper Moon produced Kentucker Audley's films "Holy Land" and "Open Five."

"The Romance of Loneliness" will be entirely shot in the Mid-South and Memphis region. Additional casting and locations will be finalized during the next few months.

Reminder: Directory listing deadline approaching

The deadline for the coming annual directory is coming up fast.

If you qualify, you can get a free listing in the Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission's 2010-2011 Production Directory.

You can be listed if you are a Memphis or Shelby County crewperson with qualified experience or a Memphis or Shelby County business that has a service that can be used by a production.

The deadline for submissions has been extended to June 18. The Directory is seen by production companies that make films, TV shows, commercials, music videos, print ads and corporate projects. It is the primary resource used to hire locally. To see the current directory, go to www.ozonline.tv.

Individuals and companies that can supply production resources — lights, lumber, caterers, hotels, for example — are welcome to list.

If you want more than the free basic listing, you can purchase an upgraded listing starting at $80 that includes a description. To get your free listing or to find out more about upgrading, contact Kime Harless, 800 705-1121, or go to www.ozonline.tv to see if you qualify.

Here are some convincing observations on the directory from some of our favorite clients:

"As a producer, it makes my job easier knowing that I can find all the experienced Memphis crew I need in the Film Commission's Production Guide."
— Stephanie Allain Bray, producer "Hustle & Flow" and "Black Snake Moan"

"The key quality of a helpful production guide is that the listings be accurate and up to date. The Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission's Production Guide is one of the more current, truthful and thorough collection of services and crew that I have found in any state or country. It's the one stop source for anyone looking to stage a production in Memphis."
— Mike S. Ryan, executive producer "Forty Shades of Blue"

"It made hiring easier knowing that all the experienced crew could be found in one easy-to-use source."
— Alan C. Blomquist, executive producer "Walk the Line"

"The Memphis Production Guide is the ONLY source to find all of the experienced Memphis crew in one place."
— James Spies, executive producer, "Nothing But the Truth"

Do it now.

The Cannes-Memphis connection

John Beifuss at The Commercial Appeal has blogged about films with local connections being screened at the Cannes Film Festival.

Memphian Nick Case is a co-producer of "S*** Year" (the profanity is in the actual title), which debuted over the weekend. The film stars Ellen Barkin and has received positive and negative revivews.

Case has partnered with Memphian Ryan Watt in Paper Moon Films, producer of Kentucker Audley's two new movies, "Open Five" and "Holy Land."

Also at Cannes, the five-minute film "Food for Haiti" screened during the festival's "Short Film Corner" showcase. The documentary was done by Memphian Gil Hayes.
