An acclaimed film (and complimentary schnapps)

This Thursday (April 1) at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, Berlin comes to Memphis via an award-winning film along with documentaries on the German connection by two local filmmakers.

This one-time local screening of "Alle Anderen" ("Everyone Else"), a double Silver Bear Award Winner at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival, is at 7 p.m. and is presented by On Location: MEMPHIS, and sponsored by the Memphis and Shelby County Film & Television Commission/Memphis ED and presented in partnership with the Memphis Council for International Visitors.

Included in the program is "The Berlin/Memphis Film Connection": three webisodes by local filmmakers Eric Swartz and Sarah Bolton, who will also be showing a trailer of their new documentary "Children Of The Wall." Eric and Sarah will be introduced by Tom Schmitt, MemphisED Chairman and Senior Vice President, FedEx Solutions.

The event is sponsored by the Memphis and Shelby County Film & Television Commission/Memphis ED and presented in partnership with the Memphis Council for International Visitors.

"Alle Anderen" (in German with English subtitles) was nominated for the Berlin festival's Golden Bear Award and won two Silver Bears for Best Actress (Birgit Minichmayer) and Grand Jury Prize.  The film tells the story of Gitti and Chris, an odd couple battling their way through a holiday of secluded togetherness. It is an intimate portrait of two people as they can only be when alone: their secret rituals, their silliness, their unfulfilled dreams and their power struggles.

Tickets: $8, $5 for Brooks members. And, yes, there will be free schnapps. Danke.

The festivities begin at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art with a Monster Martini Meet & Greet (cash bar), followed by a screening of one of Sivad's favorite films: "Night of the Demon." Admission to the film is $8 and includes a book about Sivad. Tickets are available at http://www.brooksmuseum.org.

The event is organized by the godfather of Memphis indie filmmaking, John Michael McCarthy, and film journalist John Beifuss. Special thanks go to Diane and Fred Smith, Malco Theatres, Inc., WHBQ-TV Fox 13, The Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission, MemphisED and the University of Memphis.
