The Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission/Foundation, and On Location: MEMPHIS, the tN entertainment commission  bring Shelby County’s film/tv production community yet another professional development workshop: “filming on public & private properties: what every filmmaker should know.” The workshop is scheduled for Saturday, october 14, 2023, from 10am-12pm.

the two hour virtual workshop is limited to 50 participants and is free of charge to those accepted. Funding support is provided through The City of Memphis, shelby county, and the tN entertainment commission. Elevate Initiative, powered by Frontline Solutions (funded by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation), is providing additional Support.

The workshop is presented in cooperation with IATSE-492 Tennessee.

"filming on public & private properties: what every filmmaker should know” is designed to provide participants with the general knowledge needed to professionally research and secure locations. topics discussed will include the importance of various protocols, such as neighborhood notification and returning a location to its pre-filming location. This workshop is geared towards all film/TV production positions — from producers/directors to screenwriters, production assistants, and those already working in locations.

During the workshop, participants will learn about the importance of respecting properties and property owners, and the consequences of negative behavior.

the first portion of the workshop: “filming on public property,” will be led by the film/tv commission’s deputy film commissioner/project specialist, sharon fox o’guin. Sharon has over 28 years with the film/tv commission. she has spent the last 20 years working to facilitate permitting for city and county owned locations. additionally she researches and assists with locations for the commission’s film, tv, print and streaming clients. sharon has worked with all the major television networks, as well as hulu, mtv, netflix, hbo, the travel channel, the food network and others. she has also worked with features and tv productions such as 20th Century fox’s walk the line, focus features’ 21 grams, paramount’s hustle & flow, netflix’s uncorked, nbc-universal’s bluff city law and young rock. In addition to national clients, sharon works daily with local production companies and filmmakers.

seasoned professional martin lane will lead the second half of the workshop: “filming on private property.” Martin Lane has over 30 years of experience in the local production market. he has worked for over 20+ of those years as a Location Manager.

After working as an Assistant Location Manager on the feature films Castaway and Walk the Line, he earned his first full Location Manager credit on Craig Brewer’s (paramount classics) Black Snake Moan. Since then he has worked on Multiple feature films and television productions filming in the Memphis area including yari film group’s Nothing But the Truth, cmt’s Sun Records, hallmark’s Christmas at Graceland, and Bluff City Law. In addition to his Location Manager duties, he often works as a local producer on commercial and video projects - including those for Nike, Powerade, and Body Armor.  One of the most experienced locals on the scene, Martin has become known as a "go to" resource in the local production Community. 

By the end of the workshop, participants will have an understanding of first steps to secure a public location and how to research, secure, and successfully “wrap” a private location.
